Creating a pond - no matter how small - adds a crucial habitat to your garden, providing vital shelter, drink and food for wildlife. If you’re keen to increase the biodiversity and health of your growing space, a water source is one of the very best ways to nurture nature.

Course overview

Chris Collins will lead you through a day of pond activities, including practical pond building, and explore how the thriving ponds at our organic demonstration garden are made to attract as many beneficial insects as possible.

Autumn and early spring are the best times of year for pond installation, and this workshop will provide you with everything you need to start planning for your new pond or make the most of an existing pond. We’ll cover where's best to locate your pond, construction methods, ideal dimensions, key features of a wildlife-friendly pond, choosing plants and how to maintain a water source.

This workshop will take place in our onsite classroom and demonstration garden and will have a relaxed and informal approach with plenty of opportunity for discussion with a blend of practical outdoor and classroom-based activities. Refreshments and light lunch is included and a full set of notes and resources will be provided on the day.

Course leader:

Chris Collins has horticultural experience that spans many years and many locations. After training at the Royal Botanical Garden in Edinburgh, he spent time working in Africa and Japan, before returning to the UK in 1998 as Higher Botanical Horticulturalist at Kew Gardens, and as Head Gardener at Westminster Abbey. Chris also held the highly sought-after position of BBC Blue Peter gardener for nine years, where he got to utter the line "here’s one I made earlier" on numerous occasions!
